biography:
lucy lavender pratt, born the forth child of six to david and victoria pratt, a nypd officer and an aspiring young businesswoman, of new york city. victoria, née delaney, and david were both of strong irish heritage and had both been raised in a catholic household, it was no surprise that they chose to raise their children in the same environment.
lucy came into this world ten months after the birth of her older brother, bringing the term "irish twins" ironically to the pratt pack. adam had been born eight years after their older sister and nine years after their eldest brother. two years after lucy was born, her younger sister avery followed, and just a year after avery the youngest, lucas, was born.
it didn't take the pretty little girl with the big blue eyes long to develop a fiery, feisty personality that would outshine (or savagely overpower) that of her siblings. by the time she reached the terrible twos it was apparent that she had her father's firecracker temper and the stubbornness of a dozen mules. strong willed, independent, and outspoken-- victoria was never more exhausted by any of her children as she was lucy and the matriarch counted her blessings that her eldest daughter was so helpful with corralling her younger siblings.
immediately, lucy and adam formed a bond that was not unlike the ones formed between true twins that carried well into adolescence. thick as thieves twice as mean, the two picked on and pranked their siblings without remorse from the age of five until well after they should have calmed down and behaved.
david pratt had been raised in a household with all boys, his brothers his constant companions, his father absentee and working to provide and his mother sullen and withdrawn from the neglect and emotional abuse of her husband. having daughters was something that he wasn't prepared for and it showed in the obvious favoritism of the boys and in his lack of patience with lucy's demanding personality. he strongly believed that some activities were strictly for boys; fighting, rough-housing, and male dominated sports just a few examples of what he forbid and later ignored that lucy participated in.
she was five years old when she would begin her lifetime of rebellion. lucy had asked for hockey gear for christmas and when she opened all she had under the tree and there was nothing of the sort she took the closest present, a barbie doll, and set it in her mother's microwave, turned it on and walked away. even as young as she was, lucy liked understanding that her father was angry with her for a legitimate reason rather than yelling at her for things she did not understand.
she was also very young when she noticed an attraction to girls. at first it was confusing. she ignored it, she even tried to date boys. at fourteen lucy began sneaking out of the house and going to parties with the upperclassmen, usually on the arm of some senior or junior boy that liked her for her newly developed dramatic curves, her sense of adventure, and her trucker's mouth. lucy would get found out, she would be grounded, and she would ignore it. her father would yell, she would yell back, and nothing would be accomplished. at fifteen the high school sophomore began attending parties at the nyu classes, accompanied by the same guys that took her to high school parties, and a handful of her fellow cheerleaders that weren't about to let her have all the fun.
it would change for her that year. on the school bus back from an activity in boston with her cheer squad, the girls having brought several bottles of everclear disguised as soda and drinking them for the hour before they had to load back up, lucy hooked up with a friend and the girl she had been crushing on since the seventh grade. carly was redheaded, freckled, and had always been able to make lucy laugh and lucy was accustomed to getting what she wanted from anyone that wasn't her father. lucy still attended parties but with carly in tow and sometime during the night they would find opportunity to sneak away and be together. it bothered lucy that she could only be with carly and have the other girl be comfortable when they had been drinking but she figured this was the case with a lot of couples, remembering her dates with boys where they had attempted to ply her with alcohol in order to get with her, unsuccessfully. in time, carly would become more comfortable with her budding sexuality and the girls would develop a meaningful, but secret, relationship over the course of the next year.
it was unfortunate the night that the girls were spending the night at lucy's and a very drunk david happened to be walking by his daughter's door and hear a girl's soft moan. assuming that his rebellious daughter had snuck a boy, or possibly boys into her room when she had a friend spending the night, he burst in ready to slaughter himself a couple of teenage boys. instead, and to his shock, he found his daughter in an extremely vulnerable and compromising position face down in the only one of lucy's friends he had ever liked or approved of. his reaction was to scream, throw things in her room, kick the poor girl out of their home, and yell some more at his daughter. by this time the two eldest siblings had flown the coop, leaving lucy's brother adam, who was dealing with his own nightmare with a pregnant girlfriend at seventeen, and two younger siblings that were terrified of incurring the wrath of their father. lucy was on her own in this and wouldn't stand for it. she fought back, just with her words, and finally pushed her father's anger so far past his control that in a desperate moment he lashed out at her with a quick but strong blow.
and that was the moment she realized that the second she was able to she was leaving that house for good.
as tumultuous and heated as her relationship was with her father lucy's connection to her mother was better, albeit not nearly as close as it could have or should have been. while in lucy's early childhood victoria had developed aggressive stage three breast cancer and began undergoing treatment. david loved his wife and wanted her well and in attempting to care for her and their children at the same time he became a tyrant. there was very little victoria could do about it as he was never as loud or as demanding in her presence. the children walked on eggshells, afraid to hurt their mother, terrified to enrage their father. the eldest siblings forced to assume roles in protecting and nurturing the younger four. eventually, victoria went into remission but by then it was too late. stubborn, opinionated lucy's mind was already made up and the thought that was so rock solid in her mind was that she didn't need either of her parents.
midnight, her 18th birthday. lucy had packed her two bags, a large cheerleading gym bag and her boston red sox gym bag, with clothes and school books and other small momentos that she wanted to take with her when she left her parents' home. before she made it out the door her father stopped her and forced her to leave her things, even her clothes, because if she was leaving she wasn't going to take anything of his with her. her mother fought with him and was able to convince david to let lucy take one thing, just one; pepperoni, the teddy bear.
lucy left and for the next three and a half years would never look back.
she stayed with friends, couch surfed, slept on the floor, whatever she had to do while still attending high school and working two part-time jobs to be able to buy herself new clothes and to keep herself fed. graduation came, graduation went. it was nothing special, just the greatest achievement of her childhood, but you wouldn't have been able to tell. two weeks after graduation while out with some new friends, lucy met, befriended, and flirted with an older businessman that offered to fly the girls down to a beautiful spot on the mexican coast on his private jet just so they could party with him. it was a fun weekend but when lucy refused to have sex with him he left her in mexico, stranded, and without her passport. since she wasn't speaking to her family lucy stayed in mexico for six weeks while the paperwork for her temporary passport was being processed. she worked whatever jobs she could find, learned enough spanish to survive, and made the best of a bad situation. it was this experience that taught her what she was capable of: anything.
from the age of sixteen all the way up until just after her 23rd birthday lucy was the queen of part time jobs in the five boroughs. she boasts that she's worked everywhere at least once but more accurately, she has probably had close to forty different jobs while attempting to find what worked for her. from kinkos, to candle making, from art galleries, to selling sno cones at the zoo, from blockbuster to movie theatre, from subway sandwiches to receptionist at subway smiles (an emergency dentist in the subway, they were shut down in their second week), from best buy, to a pretzel stand, from dog walker, to house sitter.
her love life remained rocky after the incident with her high school girlfriend, being forbidden to see each other, rumors flying, parents involved. lucy pulled into herself and despite the sexuality she exuded naturally tried to ignore her needs and desires and focus on improving her life. until she found herself attracted to an older, married woman. after a few months of harmless coffee dates, two trips to the movies together, more than a handful of shared gym sessions, and five months of working together lucy entered into an atypical relationship with allison, a woman ten years older than her. allison's husband was not only aware of their relationship but encouraged them to be together and encouraged allison to explore her sexuality and happiness with lucy, while promising he wanted nothing to do with lucy, sexually.
for two years lucy remained with allison but it ended, abruptly, when lucy couldn't commit to anything serious. before leaving allison, lucy had met someone else, a transgendered woman called mischa, and it was immediately that lucy began seeing mischa after leaving her. it was a rocky relationship, based mostly on sex, but it lasted almost a year. it did not end well. after the tragic death of the depressed, drug addicted woman by overdose, lucy had an abortion and vowed never again would someone get under her skin.
she attempted to reconnect with the family she had been ignoring for the last several years to very little avail. her older sister was willing to let her in, not having seen her at her worst, and adam was willing to see her some of the time and let her be part of her niece's life. it wouldn't be until the new of their mother's breast cancer returning that lucy would be able to start patching up and repairing those broken relationships. the death of victoria was sudden, too soon, and it hurt them all. lucy had been the furthest from her so most of her pain was guilt and regret. in order to try and make it up to her mother, on some level, lucy was able to convince someone to financially support her decision to buy out her aunt and take over running the flower shop that victoria had opened over twenty years before her death.
the following year would prove to be almost as tumultuous as the several before it combined. running the perfect petal, attending community college, working part time as a bartender, and exploring the expression of her sexuality as an internet 'cam girl' was just the tip of the iceberg of things to come. a handful of on-again off-again relationships, some better for her and some worse, the addition and rapid loss of close friends, lovers, and more. the burning of bridges with every one of her family members save her younger sister, her very first genuine polyamorous relationship which led to having her very first boyfriend, which led to the estrangement and jealousies of her best friend, which led to the destruction of the relationship with her boyfriend and the start of some questionable decisions.
it wasn't all bad. lucy found stability in the form of an acquaintance turned good friend turned roommate turned best friend. from her various forms of employment she was able to set up an account that would pay back the loan for the perfect petal more rapidly than was expected of her. with all of her ducks in a row lucy was able to finally do something she had always dreamed about doing; go to india. india was all she had thought it would be and then so much more. a generous sponsor that had become enthralled with lucy when she had been a cam girl was able to provide her with hundreds of life straws which she was able to hand out as she made her way across the continent. no stranger to hard work or to fending for herself, lucy found jobs where she could, and earned food and a place to stay where she could. she stayed on farms, taught children english and how to read, dug irrigation systems, helped build sturdier houses, everything that she could. during this time she was able to start moving on from some of the things that had happened in her past, heal old wounds that had been opened for far, far too long.
as the summer drew to a close she realized that running from her problems may not have been the healthiest thing to do. that and the cold, at least she hoped it was a cold, building up in her sinuses told her that it was time for her to go home. she returned to new york and rekindled her friendships that had been put on hold, while her romantic relationship took a turn for the worse. she began working at a friend's fledgling restaurant as a waitress, then a bartender, and filling in wherever she could until they decided to make her manager of the bar. lucy left her flower shop to be ran by her employees and focused on finding out where she was supposed to fit in this life, knowing that being a florist wasn't satisfying her deepest desires. a few more attempts at finding love, or someone to share a connection with, all failed. a change of roommates, a friend or two that would take turns crashing there, the reappearance of allison's ex-husband into her life, and her father seemingly doing very well within his recovery. and finally, she admitted to herself that she had been making destructive decisions out of her love for jordana and that it was more than time for that to change.
